Quick Facts
1. Who can attend South Central High School?
Any student who is 16 – 20 years old and who lives in the Bismarck School District can attend SCHS. They must have an academic reason to transfer.
2. South Central High School uses what they call a “positive attendance model” and “flex scheduling.” What does that mean?
Positive attendance model means that the minutes a student attends class are recorded in Power School. Absences or tardies are not recorded. For example, if a student attends English for an hour, the teacher will put “60” in power school to show that the student attended English and worked for that long.
Flex scheduling means that students are not assigned a time to attend class. SCHS is open for 300 minutes every day, and students have the freedom to come and go as they please during that time. Each day students are responsible for deciding when they go to class and how long they are in class. Students are generally enrolled in 3 classes at a time.
3. How does education happen at South Central High School?
There is no class lecture, no group work, and no class discussion. Students work individually with help from the teachers on their assignments, which are tied to the state standards. Students work at their own pace.
4. How long does it take to complete classes at South Central High School?
Generally, it takes 36 to 42 days. For example, English and social studies are 36 day classes. Math and science are 42 day classes. If students do not complete a class on time, they receive an incomplete. Students are allowed to re-enroll to complete the class. It is not uncommon for students to take more than the allotted time to complete a class at SCHS.
Students can complete a class early as long as they have a B or better. To complete classes early, students must have a great deal of self-discipline since they are responsible for the pace of their education.
If a student at SCHS completed all classes on time without getting any incompletes during the year, the student would earn 6-7 credits during the school year. More common is 3-4 credits a year.
5. When students transfer to South Central High School during the school year, do they get credit for assignments already done at their home school?
A copy of the student’s grade sheet will be given to the teacher at SCHS. Each teacher will decide what assignments the student will get credit for.
