English 9  Level 9-12  Credit 1/2 or 1

Freshmen English teaches students to organize information from a variety of sources, summarize information, identify and avoid plagiarism, use primary and secondary sources, and use a graphic organizer. The second semester teaches students to differentiate between characteristics of an extensive variety of non-fiction genres, and identify persuasive writing with few if any errors.

 
English 10 (05072) Level: 10-12 Credit: 1/2 or 1 Prerequisite: English 9

The first semester exposes students to various literary genres -- short stories, poetry, and nonfiction.  Students will further their understanding of grammar and mechanics through the writing of narrative, expository, and persuasive essays. The study of literature continues during the second semester with a variety of short stories, poetry, nonfiction selections, a novel, and drama. Students will continue to develop their writing skills through the writing of various types of expository and narrative essays. The writing and presentation of an informative speech will round out the semester.

 
English 11 (05073) Level: 11-12 Credit: 1/2 or 1 Prerequisite: English 10

The first semester is a chronological study of American literature from colonial times through the mid-nineteenth century. The course will build analytical reading skills based on historical, social, and cultural contexts and require a variety of activities and written responses to the literature. Formal essays are narrative, expository, and analyzing a theme. The second semester continues the study of American literature from the late nineteen-hundreds to the late twentieth century including drama and a novel.  Writing will include analyzing a novel, an expository essay, and a research based MLA formatted persuasive essay.  The oral communication process will be reviewed and students will turn their persuasive essay into a speech.

 
English 12 (05074)         Level: 11-12                Credit: 1/2 or 1          Prerequisite: English 9, 10, 11

During the senior year, students will complete units in the following areas: English literature, the study of the major works and authors in English literature from its beginning through the twentieth century, and composition, focusing on longer and more advanced papers, including a research paper. Other units may be added at the teacher’s discretion
